PHARMACEUTICALS TRADERS observed a complete bandh here on Thursday in protest against the opening of a medicine shop on Sir Sunderlal Hospital premises of the Banaras Hindu University. Members of Chemists and Druggists Welfare Association, Chemists and Druggists Association, Kashi Aushadhi Vyapar Mandal, Lanka Dava Vyavsayi Sangh and other organizations closed their shops and took out vehicle procession across the city today.

Members of Chemists and Druggists Welfare Association, Chemists and Druggists Association, Kashi Aushadhi Vyapar Mandal, Lanka Dava Vyavsayi Sangh and other organizations closed their shops and took out vehicle procession across the city today.
As per information, more than two thousand pharmaceutical shops at both the wholesale and retail markets such as Saptsagar Mandi, Bulanala Mandi, Malviya Market, Lanka Market and Kabir Chaura remained closed. An estimated turnover of around Rs 7 crore was affected in view of today’s closure of pharmaceuticals shops.
Thousands of patients admitted to various government hospitals such as Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, Shiv Prasad Gupta Divisional Hospital, Mata Anandmayi Hospital, Vivekanand Hospital and Public Welfare Hospital etc. suffered inconvenience due to the closure of medicine shops in the city. Patients of BHU Hospital also suffered as most of the medicines were out of stock at its medicine shop.
As per information, around 10,000 patients had to suffer in view of today’s closure of shops. Attendants of these patients were seen running from pillar to post to get the required medicines.
Around 150 medicine shops of Lanka area have remained closed since November 4 in protest against the opening of the medicine shop in BHU Hospital.
Pharmaceuticals traders held a meeting at Godowlia crossing and said around 10,000 people would be left unemployed due to the opening of the medicine shop. The speakers demanded from the BHU administration to cancel the license of this shop with immediate effect otherwise pharmaceuticals traders would soon observe a statewide closure of medicine shops.
President of the Chemists and Druggists Welfare Association Ramesh Jain, Ramesh Maheshwari of Chemists and Druggists Association, Vibha Shanker Singh of Kashi Aushadhi Vyapar Mandal and president of Lanka Dava Vyavasayi Sangh Rajendra Agarwal were among others who addressed the meeting.
Spokesperson of Lanka Dava Vyavasayi Sangh, Dinesh Tiwari said they would continue their closure till their demands were not fulfilled.
