The twin-engine Piper PA-31 crash-landed at the airport in Umea, 640 kilometres north of Stockholm, said AnneMarie Dahlgren of the Swedish Prison and Probation Service. There were three inmates, three guards and two crew members aboard.
"No one was injured, but the plane was destroyed," she said.
The inmates were being transported to Umea from Kramfors, about 150 kilometres further south, according to flight operator Orebro Aviation.
Dahlgren said they were taken from the plane to the prison in Umea without incident.
