Five days after the sensational gang rape of a Delhi University student in a moving car, Delhi Police on Friday arrested the "prime suspect", though three of his accomplices were still at large.

Ajit, aged about 30, had been detained by Delhi Police personnel in Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh and was being brought here for interrogation, police sources said.

He would be produced for an identification parade before the 22-year-old victim before a formal arrest was announced, they added.

Police had earlier said that Ajit, wanted in many cases of burglary and auto-theft, was the "prime suspect" who had been "positively identified" by the woman from his photograph in a dossier.

The other three men, who had allegedly abducted the woman near her house in south-west Delhi in the early hours of Sunday and gang raped her, were however yet to be traced.

Police had released identity kits of the three men, aged about 30, 40 and 50, on Thursday.

"Hopefully, we are going to nab him on Friday morning. Over 100 suspects have been questioned and we are also trying to locate the vehicles (used by the culprits)," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Deependra Pathak.

The student, who belongs to the northeast, was raped early on Sunday morning when she was returning from a roadside eatery near Dhaula Kuan with a friend.

Four men dragged her into a steel grey Santro car at around 2.15 am and raped her, while driving through the city.

They changed cars on the way and dumped the girl two hours later near Nanakpura gurdwara close to the place from where they had abducted her.

The National Women Commission has demanded quick action against the culprits.

"The police needs to be extra cautious to ensure security to women in the capital," said National Women Commission chairperson Girija Vyas.

However, Minister of State for Home Affairs Prakash Jaiswal sounded hopeful Thursday.

"Delhi Police have some vital clues in the case. A major search operation is on. The culprits will be nabbed within a day," he promised.
