Poll aspirant dies of burn injuries

Stray incidents of violence were reported as an irate mob broke windowpanes of an ambulance in protest against the death. Situation was tense in Lanka area after news of Sonkar’s death spread. Large number of PAC personnel were rushed to Lanka to avoid any untoward incident. Ghoore Lal, who had set himself ablaze in full public view near Lanka police station, had been battling for life for the last five days at a private hospital.

He took this extreme step in protest against official apathy preventing him to file nomination for the post of coprporator in Varanasi Nagar Nigam election. Police lodged cases against some reporters including one of an electronic channel, for instigating Sonkar to take the extreme step.

One named FIR against the journalist of an electronic channel was lodged with Lanka police station while two were unnamed.

Hospital spokesman Ajay Rai said that Ghoore Lal succumbed to his burn injuries at 10 am on Thursday. He had received 90 percent burn injuries.

Police seized Ghoore’s body for postmortem examination. Lanka Police satation in-charge Manoj Pant said that no arrest was made as the alleged accused was absconding.

ADM (City) Indra Vikram Singh said that a magisterial inquiry under ADM (Supply) RP Singh had been set up to investigate the matter. “The committee will investigate all aspects behind the self-immolation of Ghoore Lal” the ADM City) said.

It is to be noted that Ghoore Lal had tried to file his nomination papers from Nagwa ward.

He approached the zonal office of Nagar Nigam on the last day of nomination on Friday but at that time two candidates were quarreling with each other on some issue. Meanwhile, the deadline was over and Ghoore Lal could not file his nomination paper.
