They said Singh's son, Ajay Singh and other supporters were returning to Gulbarga in a vehicle when alleged BJP workers stopped it and sought to check it, a move opposed by the occupants.

In the ensuing clash, a 25-year-old youth, who is said to be a doctor, received grievous injuries and later died.

In a related incident, alleged Congress workers gheraoed a local Mutt pontiff charging him with supporting BJP. Police resorted to lathi-charge and bursting of teargas shells to control the stone-pelting crowds.

The pontiff was taken to Nelogi police station to give him protection.

Top district police officials, including Superintendent of Police K Ramachandra Rao, are camping at Nelogi, which comes under Jewargi Assembly segment from where Dharm Singh is seeking re-election.
