Postal employees have decided to go on a day-long nationwide strike on August 10, to press for setting up of a new pay commission.
"As per recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission, the Sixth Pay Commission should have been constituted in January 2003, and its report should have been implemented with effect from January 2006, but the Central government is still silent on the issue," Bharatiya Postal Employees Federation General Secretary Vidyadhar Pathak said.
He said the Federation had postponed its nationwide strike plans in March for two months following the assurance by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh regarding the new pay commission.
"But more than two months have passed and there is no move to set up a new pay commission therefore we have decided to go on strike for a day on August 10. We demand that the Sixth Pay Commission should be set up and its report be finalised within one year," he said.
The Federation also demanded withdrawal of the contributory pension scheme for government employees.
