Power sharing for lasting peace!

Your recent articles on the heritage of Sinhalese and Tamils, the under-representation of Tamils in the Sri Lankan public service and their unfortunate dis-enfranchisement are well researched and surpass the calibre of reporting by the Lankan media. Nobody wants to educate the masses about the root cause of our conflict and the need for peace through power sharing.

Your recent articles on the heritage of Sinhalese and Tamils, the under-representation of Tamils in the Sri Lankan public service and the history of Hill Country Tamils and their unfortunate dis-enfranchisement are well researched and surpass the calibre of reporting by the Lankan media.

The Sri Lankan media keeps reporting their biased views slanted either towards the chauvinistic Sinhalese-Buddhist side or the separatist Tamil rebels. None of the material from their media helps educate the masses about their own country. There are media such as Asian Tribune, Lanka Academic and Independent Sri Lanka who openly profess racialism and feed the war-mongering, Tamil-hating and ignorant Sinhalese masses.

On the other hand, the Tamil media are almost unanimous in propagating the views of LTTE. There is not a single journalist in Sri Lanka who wants to educate the masses about the root cause of our ethnic conflict, the political history of the two ethnic groups, the evolution of armed struggle and the urgent need for peace through power sharing.

The present day youngsters do not understand the language, culture, history and aspirations of their ethnic counterparts. There is no common language any more since English was dumped after 1956. It's a long time since the Sinhalese and Tamil youngsters addressed each other as "machan".

At a time like this, articles appearing in Hindustan Times, which help elucidate the root causes of our ethnic rivalry, are a welcome change. It is our hope that your writings will continue to shed light in the path towards peace between two desperate communities.
