Pro-reservation students torch Kurien?s effigy
THE PRO-RESERVATIONIST students of Allahabad University (AU) burnt the effigy of AU chancellor Dr Verghese Kurien and continued their relay fast on the fifth day on Monday in support of reservation in higher education. Many student leaders supported the agitation and expressed their views on the occasion.

Student leader Pravesh Singh Yadav demanded Dr Kurian’s resignation for his anti-reservation stand. Savindra Yadav hailed HRD Minister Arjun Singh’s proposal for reservation and urged him to clear his policies and issue directives regarding reservation. The leaders threatened to interrupt the admission process if their demands were not considered.
Student leader Dr Ramesh Verma accused Dr Kurien of opposing reservation and said that Dr Kurien had no right to hold the post of Chancellor of AU. Rajesh Yadav continued the relay fast today.
Those present on the occasion were Ajit Yadav, Suresh Yadav, Gulab Chandra, Neeraj Kumar, Shekhar Yadav, Ajit Bhaskar and Neeraj Sakya, among others.
Meanwhile, students took out a procession and forced closure of the AU counters against the cancellation of Urdu, Arabic and Persian quota on Monday.
Earlier, the students demanded in a meeting held at the Vice-Chancellor office that Urdu, Arabic and Persian quota in the varsity be restored.
The meeting was presided over by student leader Dr Nirbhay Singh Patel and conducted by Ziya Kaunen Rizvi.Student leader Abhishek Shukla, Lala Ram Saroj, Sunil Dwivedi, Ripusoodan Yadav and many others took out a procession through the offices of Dean (Arts), DSW and chief proctor and forcibly closed the counters before reaching the V-C’s office to hold a meeting.
The student leaders charged the AU authorities with adopting policies against the minority to restrain them from higher education. They criticised the varsity’s policy of admission regarding the Urdu, Arabic and Persian quota.
AIDSO to stage demo: The All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) decided to stage a demonstration at the district headquarters in support of their demands on Wednesday. The decision was taken in a meeting held at the AIDSO office on Sunday. The activists demanded reduction in cost of Allahabad University (AU) entrance examination forms and better fee structure in the varsity.
AIDSO’s AU unit president Rajvendra Singh said that a signature campaign was being carried out by the activists and they would send a letter signed by about 10,000 students to the President and the HRD minister in support of their demands. The activists visited AU hostels and delegacies as part of the signature campaign.
The office-bearers also decided to meet the AU academic committee to inform them about the problems of the students.
