Probe may net no catch
A PROBE into the alleged delay in blood transfusion and the death of a patient thereon at Balrampur Hospital may end up without catching up an offender.
A PROBE into the alleged delay in blood transfusion and the death of a patient thereon at Balrampur Hospital may end up without catching up an offender.

For one, the preliminary investigation said there was no delay by the blood bank, or other hospital staff in giving blood to Mehfooz, who died on Monday evening. In that case, who was responsible for his death?
His family members claimed that they gave blood in the afternoon. But, the replacement, which was to be given to Mehfooz, came late as the blood bank staff said the donated blood was being screened. The blood bank employees categorically denied the allegation.
“The family members first came to us around 3 pm for two units of blood. At 4.30 pm, they came again for a single unit. As soon as the stored blood reached the normal body temperature, we delivered it,” said Balrampur Hospital blood bank incharge Dr Shaila Khanna.
It is not the first time such an allegation has been made against the blood bank.
Similar questions were raised about its functioning following the death of a freedom fighter in June. But, later the family members of the freedom fighter withdrew the charges they had made.
A group of doctors raised doubts about the impartiality of members of the inquiry committee in the current case.
They said blood bank officials should not have been made members of the inquiry committee. In making this point, they were referring to Dr Shaila Khanna who was made a member of the inquiry committee, along with medical superintendent Dr DP Mishra and Dr MU Siddiqui.
Though the hospital authorities have demanded a report within three days, the statements of the patient’s family members could not be recorded on Tuesday. Their statements will now be recorded on Wednesday.
