At a meeting, the executive council members directed the university authorities to seek legal opinion on the issue.
They said unless the proposal was approved, even the vice-chancellor did not have the power to suspend a professor.
It may be recalled that an FIR had been lodged against Prof Rai after a scuffle between him and finance officer SP Singh.
Since then, Prof Rai has been evading the media and trying to get a stay from the High Court against his arrest. Governor TV Rajeswar had expressed displeasure over the incident. He expressed this view at the university’s programme on March 10. He had hinted at action against Prof Rai.
Sources said in light of the Governor’s mood, vice-chancellor Prof Arun Kumar suspended Prof Rai in the hope that the executive committee would approve the suspension.
A meeting was held on the issue on Sunday. But, executive council members differed with the V-C’s stand. They were in favour of seeking legal opinion before taking any action against Prof Rai. According to reports, Prof Arun Kumar tried to convince the members that he had taken the decision in view of the Governor’s views, but executive council members were not satisfied with the answer. They asked the V-C to take legal opinion before issuing any order.
