Besides, the UP Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) staff are harassing the consumers in the name of checking power theft. This has fuelled the citizens’ anger.

Though the power corporation has exempted the city from emergency rostering till June 26, almost a day-long power cut in the city doubled up their woes.

The UPPCL officials said they were helpless as the emergency power rostering chart was designed as part of Power Control System. They had to follow it, they said.

The city is receiving only 40 million units of power against the demand of 65 million units. The power rostering was suspended in the city at 7.10 am and it was restored 3.15 pm.

The day-long power rostering adversely affected the drinking water supply system in may areas. Some political parties have also planned to step up their agitation against the unscheduled power rostering.

Excessive use of outdated generators has posed a serious threat to the environment. According to a survey conducted by the Gorakhpur Environmental Action Group (GAG), nearly 12,000 generators are being used in the city.

Interestingly, these generators have been installed on both sides of the road in main markets at a gap of 5 to 10 feet.
