Qatar plans to invest $5 billion in India in an effort to boost economic ties following a visit to New Delhi by Foreign Minister Hamad bin Jassem al-Thani, his ministry announced on Tuesday.

"The state of Qatar announces its readiness to invest $5billion in various projects that will benefit both countries, it said.

It said Qatar, which is home to a large Indian expatriate community, wanted to "build bridges" with India.

Sheikh Hamad and his Indian hosts examined "several projects ... As well exchanges of expertise", it said, without giving details or any indication of the investments planned.
