TABLING OF the OBC Reservation Bill in Parliament has divided the students in Allahabad University (AU). While the anti-quota students resorted to begging on the streets to mark their protest against the government’s move, another section of the students took out a procession in support of the reservations on Friday.

Anti-reservationists, led by student leader Abhishek Shukla, resorted to begging on the roads near the varsity and also on the campus to mark their protest.
The students also shouted anti-Arjun Singh slogans and alleged that his actions have made it clear that it is his desire to see the youth of the country begging on the streets before stepping down from active politics.
Demanding reservation policy based on economic criterion, Abhishek Shukla said that the government’s move will only give rise to caste based discrimination in the society and endanger communal harmony.
A number of students including Deepak Shukla, Pradeep Narayan Dwivedi, Durgesh Narayan Pandey, Pawan Singh and Vikas Tripathi participated in the protest.
Meanwhile, former vice-president of Allahabad University Students Union Dr Nirbhay Singh Patel along with his supporters took out a rally in support of implementing 27 per cent OBC reservations in institutions of higher education as well as private sector companies.
Addressing the students Nirbhay Singh alleged that the anti-reservationists were creating a serious law and order problem in the country despite a court order banning such protests. He said that the Cabinet’s approval is the result of a long struggle of the students and said that a long way is still ahead before it actually gets affected.
A number of student leaders including Ripusudan Yadav, Mohit Patel, Lala Ram Saroj, Savindra Yadav and Raghvendra Patel were among a number of pro-reservationists who participated in the procession.
ADC students protest
Hunger strike of student leader Ramashankar Pandey ‘Sheelu’, in protest against the failure of the college management to admit more students, continued for the second consecutive day at the Allahabad Degree College’s Kydganj campus on Friday. Even as the agitation continued, news of an admission on August 22 of a student by alleged wrongful means spread among the students.
Students alleged that the college management admitted the students, who had attained 216 marks in violation of the college admission rules and in place of students having their name on the merit list.
The students demanded an explanation regarding admissions from the college authorities and failing to get a satisfactory reply, they forced closure of the admission process. The students also raised anti-college administration slogans.
