Quota limits
Abhishek Singhvi offers flawed logic to prove that people have been misled on the new quota regime (Misled on quotas, April 12). The Constitution provided reservations for OBCs only for a decade after Independence.
Abhishek Singhvi offers flawed logic to prove that people have been misled on the new quota regime (Misled on quotas, April 12). The Constitution provided reservations for OBCs only for a decade after Independence. But governments extended it and added more castes in it in self-interest.

The support in Parliament for this issue shows how all political parties want to grab votes on this basis. Singhvi should know that MPs only represent the people temporarily; they do not replace them. The Centre should give up divisive policies and concentrate on equitable growth.

Superfast court verdict
The report Superfast end to Alwar case (April 13) is a case example of the law taking the right direction. The Rajasthan government has set an example for speedy justice. In this case the victim was a foreigner. The government should set-up superfast courts for cases of violence against women. Speedy punishment will act as a deterrent.

Future lessons
It is tragic to see a trade fair turning into a graveyard (Infernal apathy, April 12). It is the result of haphazard security measures. This shows that we have learnt nothing from past incidents.

Whenever a tragedy occurs, the authorities try to hide facts from the public. An inquiry is ordered to placate the victims’ families, but no lesson is ever learnt to avoid further accidents. Is it enough to order an inquiry.

Dancing light
Kudos to Mumbai High Court for lifting ban on bar girls (HC kiss of life for dance bars, April 13). There were so many bar girls who were the sole earning members of their families. Now they can go back to making a livelihood. Before the government decides to ‘clean up’ society, it must understand that in the era of the internet and satellite TV, it can’t impose morality on citizens. It’s a choice that citizens make.

A friend indeed
The government must remember that the displaced persons in the Narmada Valley had only Medha Patkar to listen to their woes. It must take good care of her.
