Newly appointed member of theAll India Congress Committee (AICC) SM Sultan said here on Saturday that in the existing political scenario, it was the need of the hour that young and dynamic MP Rahul Gandhi should be assigned some important responsibility in the Congress party to strengthen it, specially in states influenced by the Left parties like Tripura and West Bengal.

Rahul Gandhi must not be confined only to the parliamentary constituency of Amethi in UP but in the interest of the Congress, his energy should be utilised in strengthening the party organisation throughout the country, given his growing popularity among the masses, Sultan said.

Sultan, who is also a former national secretary of the All India Youth Congress and spokesman of UPCC, had launched a campaign for the youths of UP, Bihar and MP during his tenure as the All India Youth Congress secretary for bringing Rahul into active politics.

He was recently appointed as the first  member of the AICC from the minority community in Varanasi following his hold over the Muslims of the region. He has persistantly been struggling for the development and uplift of weavers of this region, who are in a crisis due to recession in carpet manufacturing.

During the recent three-day national convention of the Congress in Hyderabad from January 21 to 23, Sultan along with other youth leaders , had urged the Congress high command to assign important responsibility and post in the AICC to Rahul to improve the  prospects of the party.  Sultan is of the view that with Rahul playing an active role, the Congress will be rejuvenated in states where it is weak, including UP.
