Officials considered close to former chief minister M Karunanidhi, former state intelligence chief ADGP MS Jaffer Sait and several others were raided on Tuesday in connection with last year's Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) land allotment scam.

On the eve of assembly polls in April, Sait was transferred to West Bengal by the Election Commission, but he went on leave instead.

Powerful officials allegedly grabbed prime residential plots in the name of their wives, children or relatives. FIRs have been filed against kin of officials who are under the scanner of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), sources said. DVAC sleuths raided 10 places.

The Jayalalithaa government has launched a crackdown on land grabbing cases in which union chemicals and fertilisers minister MK Alagiri's wife and two former DMK ministers, alongwith local DMK functionaries, have been implicated.

The DMK has charged the government of “foisting false cases” targeting its members .

Houses of K Rajamanickam, personal secretary to the former CM and his three personal security officers, C Ganesan, P Pandian and Arivalagan were also searched.
