Most parts of Himachal Pradesh were lashed by intermittent pre-monsoon rains during the past 24 hours, bringing cheers to farmers and relief to people.

Shimla and its surrounding areas had 18.8 mm of rains since Tuesday, 15.2 mm of which was received overnight.

Shimla area, which had rains for the fourth successive day today recorded 34 mm of rains during past 72 hours, which was ideal for the crops, Associate Director, Horticulture Research Centre, S R Bhardwaj said.

Meanwhile reports of widespread pre-monsoon rains had been received from various parts of the state including Rampur, Jubbal, Kotkhai, Chopal, Kumarsein, Rohroo, Sundernagar, Solan, Parwanoo, Kullu, Mandi, Manali, Kangra, Palampur and Nilaspur.

The rains broke the prolonged dry spell, which had played havoc and triggered forest fires. The forest department heaved a sigh of relief as the rains extinguished the forest fires and soaked the highly inflammable dry pine needles with water.
