Established off-spinner Ramesh Powar and experienced wicketkeeper Vinayak Samant combined well to give Mumbai a solid start to their title defence at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday.
On the opening day of the new Ranji Trophy season, Mumbai reduced Karnataka to 189 for 9 in their Super League Group A encounter after the visitors chose to bat. Powar picked up five for 69 while Samant’s tidy work behind the stumps helped him account for five dismissals including a smart leg-side stumping.
While Karnataka had a disastrous day, their man in question, Rahul Dravid, had positives to ponder over.
In scoring 40, he did not show any signs of discomfort during his stay for over two hours in testing conditions.
As Dravid settled down in the company of C. Raghu, after Agarkar gave yet another breakthrough by removing Pawan, he was in no hurry to go after the leather. He picked up his first boundary with a punch off Rajesh Verma through the covers off his 36th delivery. A couple of more delightful shots came soon after spin was introduced in the 17th over.
With runs not coming at an easy pace, Karnataka’s plight was made worse by the slow outfield. That only 24 fours were scored in 91 overs speaks volumes about the sluggish nature of the outfield as well as the demands the pitch imposed.
Dravid and Raghu seemed to go well but raised no more than 49. Raghu was dismissed by Mumbai’s third seamer, Abhishek Nayar, a loose shot resulting in an edge to the wicketkeeper.
