Fierce protests gripped Jharkhand capital Ranchi on Thursday following the alleged gang-rape of an 11-year-old tribal girl.
Mobs broke windscreens of vehicles in the Bariatu area and blocked a busy road, demanding the arrest of the culprits.
A youth, identified as Goldie Khan, was detained in connection with the alleged sexual assault. The police have launched a manhunt for another accused.
The girl was abducted on Wednesday evening en route to her sister's house, which is near her residence. Her parents alleged she was taken to a nearby hillock and raped.
"She was bleeding profusely and was semi-conscious when she reached home around 10pm. We rushed her to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, where doctors confirmed raped," the elder sister claimed.
Ranchi senior superintendent of police Bhimsen Tuti said, "We have apprehended Goldie Khan late last night. A search is on for the other accused."
Vehicles, including school buses, were stranded for hours after the protests erupted. Police officials faced a tough task while managing traffic and pacifying protesters.
Jharkhand has witnessed a spurt of rape cases this year. Police records say 1,124 rape cases have been registered till October 31. In 2012, the number stood at 812.
National Crime Records Bureau reports suggest more than 7,500 women and girls have been raped in the state since its formation in 2000. Around 500 of them were minors.
The Jharkhand Women's Commission (JWC) has taken a serious note of the recent incident. JWC president Mahua Majhi has demanded immediate action in the case.
