Officials are confirming nine deaths and a dozen injured, but the number of deaths and injured is feared to rise. Army has been pressed into rescue operation.

'It appears that driver of Goa Express overlooked the signal and this led to collision with Mewar Express, already on same track probably due to chain pulling, observed Rajendra Dutt Tripathi, the Divisional Railway Manager at Agra.

'This is subject of detailed enquiry and exact reasons are to be assigned only after that' said Tripathi.

'Relief from Palwal and Agra have reached the spot and trains are being diverted from alternate Tundla, Agra Bayana railway track' said Tripathi. 'Cutters are being used to move the trapped passengers out' he added. Injured are admitted to nearby private hospital.
