Regulatory body for TV: Minister

The government is working towards setting up an independent regulatory mechanism to rein in vulgarity and obscenity on television, Information and Broadcasting minister Ambika Soni told the Rajya Sabha on Monday.
Her comments came after members across the political spectrum expressed deep concern over the deteriorating content on TV and its damaging influence on society during a discussion on increasing vulgarity in TV programmes.
Soni said her ministry hoped to put in place an independent and credible regulatory mechanism with some teeth to take care of violations by content providers and advertisers.
She said, “There are 480 channels in the country. It is difficult for one body to represent all of them. There is need for setting up a Broadcasting Authority of India through the Broadcasting Bill.”
The I&B ministry held a series of meetings with bodies such as National Broadcasters Association, Indian Broadcasters Foundation, etc, to evolve consensus for a regulatory mechanism.
The debate has been triggered by the reality TV show, Sach Ka Saamna.
