THE ENERGY Task Force (ETF) at its meeting presided over by Chief Secretary, Navin Chand Bajpayee gave approval to the Reliance Energy Limited (REL’s) request for enhancing the capacity of the proposed Rosa thermal power house from 600 mw to 1200 mw. The matter will now be referred to the Cabinet for its clearance.

The REL had recently taken over the Rosa Power Company, originally established by the Aditya Birla Group some eight years back, to set up the 600 mw power house at Rosa in Shahjahanpur district. However, a few days back, it requested the UP Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam to allow it to set up the plant of 1200 mw capacity instead of 600 mw capacity. The company apparently wanted to avail various tax exemptions which it can get after the project is declared as the mega power project. A project over 1,000 mw capacity comes under the mega project category.

The Utpadan Nigam put up the matter to the Energy Task Force which gave its approval at its meeting today. However, the ETF asked REL not to deviate from the original schedule of starting the work. As per the original schedule, the company has to set one unit of 300 mw within 37 months and another of the same capacity within 41 months, the time to be counted from November 1.

The ETF said that the REL will also have to pass on to the State as well as the consumers, the benefits coming to it from the tax exemptions due to the project being granted the mega project.status.
