Resentment over power cuts

UNSCHEDULED AND prolonged power rostering at night for the past two weeks may trigger off law and order problems in the city. When a red alert was sounded in the entire state after the communal clashes in Aligarh on the day of Ramnavmi, the power corporation officials suspended the power supply to the city when the huge procession of Ramnavmi was on the street and passing through minority-dominated areas.

Elaborate security arrangements made by the district administration and peace-loving people of the city kept the miscreants at bay. However, the organising committees of the processions strongly condemned the insensitive attitude of the power corporation officials over rostering of power, which have turned normal life into a living hell.

The power supply to the city was suspended at 10.10 pm on Thursday and awaiting restoration of power supply people passed a sleepless night. Power supply was restored in the wee hours. The unscheduled power rostering has also adversely affected the water supply in various localities. Even the district hospital has not been exempted from emergency rostering.

Meanwhile, various traders’ organisations have geared up to hit the street demanding suspension of power rostering at night. President of All India Udyog Vyapar Mandal Afzal Ahmad and secretary Satyendra Singh blamed the state government for harassing the residents of the city regarding distribution of power supply.

The Bunker Front leaders have also condemned the state government for not fulfilling its promises to the people that power supply would improve in April. The city is receiving 8 to 10 hour power supply at regular intervals but the condition of rural areas is pathetic.

Unscheduled power cuts for many hours have paralysed the water supply in various localities. In the city Betiahata, Jharna Tola, Sainik Vihar, Mohaddipur, Jharkhandi, Divya Nagar and various other localities were enveloped in darkness due to trip in power supply.

The rural areas where the state government has promised to ensure 14-hour power supply, the electricity is not available from five consecutive days. Ekla, Mahua Dabar, Sukrauli, Belipar and other localities remained in darkness for the fifth day on Friday.

The administration, however, has not taken any notice of the grievance of the people so far due to work boycott of the power employees.
