IT IS strange but true. Incidents of violence in Maharashtra and other parts of the country, after the desecration of Dr BR Ambedkar’s statue in Kakadeo on Wednesday, have surprised the city residents. Setting an example of peaceful co-existence, people here today went through their daily routine without showing any signs of yesterday’s incident.
While Maharashtra was burning, Kanpur residents chose to overlook the incident, in which some unidentified miscreants had damaged an Ambedkar statue in Kakadeo locality, and move on with life. They were surprised to see the violence in Maharashtra and Gujarat that was sparked by the incident on different news channels.
While calls from their relatives living outside the State kept them busy throughout the day, people here were firm that they would not allow anyone to disturb the peace and harmony of the city. “We all are sensible citizens and can take things in the right spirit,” they said.
While the district administration and police officials were on their toes, they heaved a sigh of relief after no incident of further violence or protest was reported today. The incident site, where a new statue had already been established, too was manned by only one policeman.
DIG police Diljeet Singh said, “We are aware that it’s a sensitive issue and I will like to thank the citizens of Kanpur, who showed a sense of responsibility and helped the administration in maintaining law and order in the city.” The police had been put on high alert and we were ready to deal with any emergencies, he added.
However, there was also a under current of fear, as rumors of provoking violence in different parts of the city were heard throughout the day. These rumors were a part of a plan, a senior official in the local intelligence told HT.
There were some forces, which were still trying to create a Maharashtra-like situation in the city, the official added.
