Return of the crooner

Nomad-singer Lucky Ali has returned after a long hiatus with eight-track album, Kabhi Aisa Lagta Hai. It has just hit the stores.

Lucky Ali never believes in setting deadlines for himself. While most musicians think of creating an album right after their current album has hit the store, Lucky is never easily satisfied. “I’m not interested in the numbers game. Unless I am sure that the tune will translate into great music, I’m not convinced. I make no compromises as a musician.”

Lucky’s eight-track album, Kabhi Aisa Lagta Hai (T-Series) has just hit the stores and the experience has been fantastic he says. “I composed all the tracks except, Ek Pal Mein Hai. I wouldn’t like to categorise the album in any particular genre: it’s inspired by love, the most powerful emotion of all. So from soulful numbers like Tanhaai Mein Basi to the cute Jabse Mili Tumse, Kabhi.. is about loving and losing your love.”

Lucky, a man of few words in real life, may have failed to make an impression in Sur as an actor, but he hastily points out that after “Kaante people did want to sign me as an actor but I wasn’t interested. Being on camera is awkward.”

You’d expect veteran film comedian Mehmood’s first-born to have starry inclinations but Lucky says that beyond music he’s a “boring man. I am a family person who spends time with his children, breeds horses, reads books and listens to music. My favourites include the Beatles, R.D. Burman and Kishore Kumar. For me, bliss is to listening to an old CD of R.D.”

RHYTHM CORNER Lucky grew up in a stud farm in Texas, sold carpets in West Asia, lived in Wellington and cut  Sunoh, his first album, in 1997. O Sanam, the music video for Sunoh, was shot in Dubai on his wife. As a teenager, he did a cameo in Humare Tumhare and Kunwara Baap
