It’s the return of the native with a difference. Taking a break from his lucrative job in the USA, he has come back to his native village in Gorakhpur to take on the might of the mafiosi and set his house in order.

Meet Raja Vasistha Tripathi, professor in Vascular Genetics at the University of California, Los Angeles who has landed in Gorakhpur to wage a war against the mafiosi-turned-politicians who are contesting Vidhan Sabha election in East Uttar Pradesh.

Unmindful of the terror tactics adopted by the mafia and criminal groups, Tripathi is moving from one village to another in Chillupar assembly segment urging people to vote against the mafia.

"Be reasonable. The mafia will never work for your welfare and development is not in their agenda. Instead, they will establish a reign of terror to grab the public money," he tells the villagers.

He calls Chillupar assembly segment located in south of Gorakhpur as the ground zero of the mafia domain. "From this place the top mafia of Uttar Pradesh – Hari Shankar Tewari - started his political career. It paved the way for the entry of the criminals in politics," Tripathi rued.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Triapthi said he had decided to start the movement against mafiosi from Chillupar only. "If Tiwari loses election, it would send a message across Uttar Pradesh and people would stand up against the mafiaosi who are using politics as a protective gear and suppressing the common people," he said.

Interestingly, Tripathi belongs to the same village as that of Hari Shankar Tiwari- Tanda. What motivated him to pick up cudgels against the mafia?

"Back in the USA, people who knew Gorakhpur used to equate it with Chicago. Gorakhpur was being termed as the crime capital of UP. The fact that it was the land of Buddha, Kabir, Gorakhnath, Firaq Gorakhpuri, Hazari Prasad Dwivedi and Baba Raghav Das has been forgotten. That my native place was being identified with mafiosi and criminals hurt me and I decided to return and declare a war on them," he replied.

Tripathi is not alone in this fight. He has formed a club of 250 scientists including Dr JC Mishra, Director, NCSI, Pune, Dr Lalji Singh, Director, CCMB, Hyderabad, Dr Mangla Rai DG, ICAR, New Delhi etc. Several of these scientists would visit Gorakhpur soon to assist Tripathi in his campaign.

"There is a need to change the mindset of the people and the mafiosi would be on the run. People of Gorakhpur had elected an eunuch as mayor to register protest against corruption being promoted by the politicians. Once again, the message of change would spread from this place only," he said confidently.

"My slogan is Naa goli- naa gaali. Kewal khushhaali, he said. (Bid an adieu to muscle and money power from politics and talk only of progress)
