Ricardo Powell is an undeniable asset to West Indies in one-day cricket.
Capable of rapid scoring, as typified by his 124 not out off 93 balls against India in the Singapore Challenge five years ago, he is also a brilliant fielder.
A first-class batting average of 26 explains, however, why he has not yet added to the solitary Test cap he won in New Zealand later that same year.
Powell was included in the Windies squad after the retirement of Carl Hooper. Powell had the reputation of a genuine all-rounder which led to his inclusion ahead of other experienced players.
Born in Jamaica, Powell has now switched allegiances to play for Trinidad and Tobago in West Indies domestic cricket.
He recently marked his second first-class appearance for his new team by taking 115 off a Barbados attack featuring four pacemen with Test experience and the selectors hope he can now add consistency to his undoubted natural ability. Born in Jamaica, Powell has now switched allegiances to play for Trinidad and Tobago in West Indies domestic cricket.
His right-arm off breaks and brilliant fielding give him the edge over other players in the squad.
Though being a regular player in the one-day arena, Powell is yet to make his mark in the longer version of the game.
