Casting of votes was under way at various railway offices where ballot boxes were kept.

The voting will continue till January 8 in the district.

Railway employees can go on a nationwide strike only after a majority of the employees vote in favour for the proposed strike.

Earlier, the employees’ union launched a drive to mobilise support for the strike.

Speaking at a meeting of employees, Gupta blamed the Union Government for deceiving the employees’ union. He said if the government failed to meet long-pending demands, railwaymen could call for an indefinite strike in February.

Constitution of the Sixth Pay Commission and stopping surrender of posts are among the major demands of the employees’ union.

On Tuesday, the NE Railway Mazdoor Union and the PRKS kept ballot boxes at various offices of the Railways to seek the opinion of employees. The ballot boxes were kept at Loco Workshop and near the Washing Pit.
