THE district police heaved a sigh of relief after they dramatically arrested the accused who committed a daring loot of around Rs 16 lakh in the heart of the city in Gandhi lane on October 29, 2005.
However, they have failed to recover the looted amount from the accused who were sent to jail on Friday. Sources said they had been absconding for the last five months.
According to sources, on a tip-off police post incharge Sarhari, Rajiv Ranjan swung into action and reached Gandhi lane where the main accused was to visit a bag shop with accomplices.
As the accused along with his associates entered the shop, Rajiv Ranjan nabbed the associate of the accused. In meantime, the accused took out his pistol and tried to threaten the police inspector who in a daring act, overpowered the main accused.
Later, on the information, special operation group (SOG) also rushed to the spot and arrested the accomplice of the main accused Shakeel Ahmad, a resident of Nasirabad locality under Kotwali police station.
Police have claimed that Shakeel was also wanted in Menka Talkies bomb blast case, which took place on January 23, 1993. Many cases are registered in different police stations against Shakeel.
The arrest of Shakeel was a tough job for the police force and in a daring incident he had looted the salesman of Anand Agencies, a dealer of home appliances and telecommunication articles at Gandhi lane under Cantonment police station.
The crime was committed in front of the police post, which had exposed all the tall claims of police officials to check the crime graph in the district.
Loot at gunpoint and opening and brandishing arms at the police is one instance of the daring attitude of Shakeel and his accomplices.
According to sources, the police thoroughly interrogated Shakeel and have found some clues. They have expressed the hope that the amount looted would be recovered soon.
