He was addressing the inaugural function of a two-day national workshop on ‘Application of Rock Mechanics in Mining’ at the Department of Mining Engineering, Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University on Friday.

The Centre of Advanced Study in Rock Mechanics and Ground Control and Geo-environment has organised the workshop.

Prof UK Singh said rock mechanics ascertained the best possible design of a tunnel so that optimum quantity of minerals was extracted and the roof remained stable. He said a weak roof was the major reason behind most of the underground accidents.

Prof Singh also laid stress on extensive field research before drafting a design through numerical modeling analysis. He said field research provided brief detail of practical problems in mining. He further said numerical modeling analysis was the most suitable method for mining in the Indian conditions.

He stressed the need for more and more research work in the field of rock mechanics. He also laid emphasis on the need of extensive measurement of field to ascertain the stress on underground mines, which was responsible for underground accidents.

Presiding over the inaugural function, IT-BHU director Prof SN Upadhyay stressed the need for extensive research on the physical, chemical and mechanical structure of rock for mining.

Co-ordinator of the Centre of Advanced Studies at the Department of Mining Engineering (IT-BHU) Prof BK Srivastava introduced the theme of the workshop and said that extracting maximum amount of coal and ore along with proper security had been a matter of concern for mining engineers.
