Row over Brahmin meeting

The proposed Brahmin conference in Lucknow on April 30 seems to be dogged by a controversy. While on the one hand the organisers of the conference are claiming that it is totally non-political, on the other, some leaders are seeing it as a bid to counter the Brahmin conferences organised by the Bahujan Samaj Party leaders at different places in the state.

The proposed Brahmin conference in Lucknow on April 30 seems to be dogged by a controversy. While on the one hand the organisers of the conference are claiming that it is totally non-political, on the other, some leaders are seeing it as a bid to counter the Brahmin conferences organised by the Bahujan Samaj Party leaders at different places in the state.

Apart from the controversy, the proposed conference has brought cabinet minister Harishanker Tiwari into centrestage. Tiwari is president of LoktantriL Congress Party and a strong ally of Mulayam Singh Yadav. The strong Brahmin lobby in eastern UP is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the success of the proposed conference.

Former president of Students Union of Gorakhpur University Vijay Shanker Pati Tripathi and former secretary Shiv Kumar Tripathi alias Chhotu claimed that the proposed conference would give a new dimension to politics. He clarified that the conference would not step up casteism as the people were apprehending and claimed that the proposed conference would be beneficial for alround progress of the society and to sideline the communal forces. Divisional president of All India Brahmin Mahasabha Jaiprakash Mishra has raised questions over the relevance of the proposed conference.
