A coach attendant found the bag in the AC-1 coupe of the Hazrat Nizamuddin-Habibganj Bhopal Express shortly after it arrived around 7.30am and informed senior officials.
The railway police found the seat was reserved for the East Delhi MP. The bag's discovery triggered a flutter, before the MP said any controversy was "needless".
He told mediapersons the bag belonged to his friend Jayesh Mathur who had travelled in the same train and had left the bag with him for safekeeping.
He added he had forgotten to hand over the bag to Mathur while deboarding. Mathur accepted the money belonged to him and said it was for buying a flat in Bhopal. "I had little hope of getting the money back.
Hats off to the honesty of the person who handed over the bag." Coach attendant Bhagwan Das who found the cash-laden bag said, "The money was in the form of notes of R1,000 denomination. I have found abandoned goods and valuables earlier too and got them deposited with the authorities."
Das said he never entertained the thought of keeping the money. "I am not greedy."
Railway Protection Force commandant AK Agnihotri said the bag was in the possession of the government railway police. Mathur added, "I will get the money back through court."
