Rs 14 crore of ‘unaccounted’ cash seized

The Ghaziabad police on Monday claimed to have recovered around Rs 13.66 crore of ‘unaccounted’ cash from three different places at Link Road, Indirapuram and Masuri areas of Ghaziabad, during a checking operation before the forthcoming Assembly elections.

Out of the cash recovered on Monday, Rs 12.30 crore was temporarily seized from vans of a cash disbursement agency that was carrying the amount from a bank branch in east Delhi for filling up ATMs.

“When stopped for checking, the staff in the vans could not produce the satisfactory documents on the source of cash. We have called the income-tax department officials and magistrate to inquire into the source of the cash, out of which R8 crore is stated to belong to several private persons,” said Raghubir Lal, senior superintendent of police (SSP).

Police also seized Rs58 lakh from Masuri area near NH-24 and Rs 20 lakh in Indirpauram, in two other instances.

“All these seizures have been reported to income tax officials, who are inquiring into the source of cash procured,” SSP added.
