This stand taken by an ally can put the CPI(M) on a sticky wicket at a time when the Left Front’s biggest partner is desperate to corner Banerjee and prove her Maoist links.

However, the RSP did not spare Banerjee or the Maoists.

“There is nothing new in the fact that the Maoists are working hand in glove with the Opposition. This is a dangerous trend. The Trinamool Congress is aiding anti-government forces at every place where it wants to break new ground for political reasons. This is uncalled for in a democratic country,” said PWD Minister Kshiti Goswami.

The RSP took the stand at the end of its two-day state secretariat meeting on Friday.

“We are not sure whether he (Azad) was killed in an encounter with the security forces or murdered... The Centre should carry out a thorough investigation and come up with a report,” Goswami said.
