Saifuddin Soz, former National Conference member, shot into prominence on the national horizon when as an NC MP he voted against the NDA government in the no confidence motion in the Lok Sabha in 1999 and brought down the 13-month old BJP-led government. For his act, the party had expelled him from the NC for life.

For Soz, who displayed a pro-congress tilt, it was against his conscience to vote in favour of a government which had its roots in the fundamentalist RSS. His stand remains that Jammu and Kashmir had joined India for secularism and the party representing the state cannot compromise its basic ideals built on the ideals of secularism.
Soz who joined NC in 1982 after Sheikh Abdullah’s death, is for reviving the secular and democratic forces at the Centre and in Jammu and Kashmir as envisaged by Sheikh Abdullah.
