The process has been initiated by the government to give extension to the 1970-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, official sources said in New Delhi on Friday.
Saran, who was appointed as Foreign Secretary in June, 2004, was to retire next month-end on superannuation.
He has been the key interlocutor in the negotiations on the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, which is yet to be concluded.
