He was brash and high-handed. Pravin Mahajan had warned interrogators at the Worli police station against "squeaking" to the media. Till Wednesday, Pravin was in the custody of Worli police, but is now lodged at the Arthur Road jail.

Interrogators say Pravin had a razor-sharp intellect with a penchant for throwing his weight around. He would banter with the officials, recite couplets in Marathi when in good mood, which was often, but would not shy from reminding them in subtle ways that he was "no common criminal".

Wife Sarangi, on the other hand, is still in deep shock. She has been continuously weeping and fretting about her children's future. Sources said the family watched the funeral live on television.
