THE SUPREME Court today gave a week’s deadline to the Centre to decide on handing over of investigation to CBI into the dwindling tiger population, allegedly due to poaching, in Panna Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh.

The order to this effect was passed by a bench comprising Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal, Justice Arijit Pasyat and Justice S H Kapadia which was informed by the Ministry of Forest and Environment that it has already handed over to CBI the probe into the diminishing population of big cat in Ranthambhore National Park in Rajasthan.

The court directed the MoEF to make its stand clear by January 13 on the issue relating to CBI probe into the poaching at Panna National Park.

The petition was filed by a wildlife expert Ashok Kumar through post to the apex court after CBI had submitted a report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh stating that not a single tiger was left in the Sariska Tiger Reserve due to poaching and negligence of forest officials.
