"Law is there. The Supreme Court has given the judgment. The Supreme Court has laid down certain guidelines in which it can be done and any responsible government would follow the law," Patil told a news channel.

On Tuesday, Union Law Minister HR Bhardwaj had favoured changes in the existing laws to provide safeguards against phone tapping saying "the laws we have at the moment are not in keeping with the changing times".

The Law Ministry will take up the matter only after the Information Technology Ministry or Telecommunications Ministry raises the issue, he had said.
