One of the oldest mediums of expression known to mankind is art. Numerous cave paintings all over the world are testimony to the fact that man is, and always has been, an artist.

Art, which in earlier times had perhaps been just an avenue for self-expression, has acquired a commercial aspect now. This is where the highly creative and commercially viable profession of Applied Art comes in.

Applied artists put artistic and creative skills to commercial application. They specialise in popular fields such as illustrating and designing jackets for books, in advertising (as visualisers), graphics, printing and silk screen printing. Artists may design stamps in the post and telegraphs department or work in weaver’s centres, packaging units, computer firms and dot com companies.

Older applications of commercial art like layout and designing of newspapers, magazines, and advertising campaigns are still very much alive and kicking.

But the entry of the Internet into our lives and the commercial world has opened up new vistas for people with deft hands and a creative bent of mind. Applied art also includes computer aided design (CAD) and web design.

Educational Path You can join after Class XII (arts preferred), most schools conduct entrance tests for school leavers. Bachelors’ degrees / diplomas in Art, with specialisations in the area of interest are offered by many institutes.

Degree courses are of 4-5 years and diploma courses of 2-3 years. Graduate degree (BFA) can be followed by a postgraduate degree (MFA) or by specialised diploma courses in the field of specialisation.

Requirements To make a career in Applied arts one must possess a creative ability and love of colours. Coupled with an urge to explore and patience and keen observation is a must. Besides the above qualities one must also have an eye for form and a lot of dedication and patience.

Job Opportunities Art students have a large spectrum of options in front of them, ranging from working in art studios, advertising companies, publishing houses, fashion houses etc.

A number of artists can choose to be freelance workers, as this adds the scope of variety in their projects. Other relevant careers are teaching, direction, photography, television, clothing and fashion, as art directors for magazines, on-line services, software companies, publishing houses, manufacturers, advertising, promotion and product design.
