The rally included the people associated with electronic media as well as cameramen and journalists of the print media. It started at Subhash Crossing and finally culminated at High Court crossing where a meeting was held afterwards.
The participants in the rally were holding banners and placards on which slogans such as ‘Stop the attacks on media’, ‘We will not tolerate oppression’ etc were written.
Addressing the gathering, CPM MLA Ramkripal said attack on the media was not good for democracy.
He appealed to the journalists to shun yellow journalism and also requested the politicians to stop interfering with the functioning of the media.
Another speaker, former MLA Anugrah Narayan Singh, aqlso supported the protest. He said the step undertaken by the city journalists would help in the independent functioning of the media. Dr Yogeshwar Tiwari, president of AUTA, assured his support in the struggle.
Besides the journalists, several Allahabad University leaders,, advocates and people belonging to various other organisations were also present in the rally.
A meeting of the representatives of the electronic media and photographers will take place at Chandrashekhar Azad Park on Sunday in which issues related to the independence of the media and its security will be discussed.
Injured: Umakant (40) son of Mathura Prasad, resident of Khaptiha village under Handia police station received injuries when he was hit by a tempo near Saidabad on Monday. He has been admitted to the SRN Hospital.
