The reason why power plants in Uttar Pradesh were performing badly was inappropriate maintenance management system. Former member, (generation), UP Power Corporation Limited, SP Singh said this during an all-India seminar on ‘Modern maintenance systems and practices in power plants: Advances and avenues’ held recently at Anpara.

Singh said unsatisfactory quality of overhaul by way of inadequate/inappropriate work scope, improper planning for overhauling resulting in non-availability of the required spares during the planned outages, inappropriate inspection during overhauls and lack of proper vendor expertise/quality were factors for poor power supply.

He said power units were being operated with condenser tube leakages which would have a long-term adverse effect on pressure part components and turbine internals. He also blamed the poor performance of air pre-heater and milling system besides non-availability of critical equipment like boiler feed pumps, condensate pumps, ID fan etc for the unsatisfactory performance of power generation units.Clearly, the strategy for any sustainable performance improvement would require planning for a comprehensive overhaul of each unit and ensuring all the areas/gaps which were causing forced outages be identified, he said. It would also be necessary to ensure that the spares required for the purpose were quickly identified and ordered immediately so as to match the targeted planned overhaul dates.
