Acting on a tip off, police swooped on the key accused Venkat Subbaiah and five of his associates on Monday night while they were trying to sell the `drug' at Brigade Road Palm Grove Residency.

Police immediately seized the packets containing nearly half kg of `brown sugar'.

However, when the contents were sent for chemical analysis, it was discovered that the stuff being passed off as original brown sugar, which the persons claimed was worth Rs 40 lakh, was nothing but plain salt, police sources said.
