People were watching a regional folk dance at Pannaha village late on Monday when a speeding car ran into them and mowed them down.

Police rushed the injured to a nearby hospital where seven people were pronounced dead. 19 are currently undergoing treatment.

The condition of four of the injured was described by doctors as critical and they were rushed to Gorakhpur Medical College, a police official told IANS.

The dead include two women and four men. The driver and two other passengers were severely beaten up by angry villagers and later handed over to police. They were apparently drunk as bottles of liquor were found in the car.
