Earlier, cops and people from cross section of society, who had gathered under a pandal in the police lines, offered floral tributes on the photograph of the killed cop whose courage has made him a hero for all times to come.
A two-minute silence was also observed in respect of the daparted soul. Several traders from Civil Lines, where the incident took place, also participated in this brief function where Maina Pandey, widow of the head constable, was handed over the cheque.
Heart broken by the sudden and untimely death of her husband, Maina got down the car with the help of few women accompanying her. Though she managed to remain quiet with her head resting on the shoulder of another woman, she broke down after the function. She was somehow taken into the car by grieving relatives and friends.
It was only today when cops and colleagues of Pandey came to know about the number of cases he had worked out in his short but eventful career in the department.
The list was endless, running into several pages.
Meanwhile, the SSP announced that cops of all rank in the district had decided to donate a day’s salary on October 1 in memory of their slain colleague. The money thus collected would be handed over to Pandey’s widow, he said.
