Congress is committed to taking all steps for safeguarding the religious and linguistic minorities in Assam, party President Sonia Gandhi said on Thursday.
An amendment was already brought to the Foreigners Act so that the minority communities were not harassed and faced no problem in the name of being detected as foreigners, she told an election rally in Silchar.
Attacking the opposition Asom Gana Parishad, she alleged that the party had failed to implement its promises to the people forcing them to reject the regional party.
"Congress is the only party that can bring change in Assam as it has a clear political and economic policy for the state unlike the other parties," she said in her brief speech.
Appealing to the people to elect a party which could form the government and work for them, she said the Congress' main aim was to serve the people.
"BJP claims to be a patriotic party. That is not correct as it is the Congress which has made the biggest contribution to the country's freedom movement," she claimed.
The people of Assam had always supported Congress and she was confident that they would do so again during the coming assembly election in the state, she added.
