Sonia, Maya to launch campaigns tomorrow

Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Bahujan Samaj Party supremo and chief minister Mayawati will launch their campaigns in the state on Wednesday. HT reports.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Bahujan Samaj Party supremo and chief minister Mayawati will launch their campaigns in the state on Wednesday.

Gandhi will address rallies in Gonda and Deoria the same day. Thereafter, she will address public meetings at Unnao and Allahabad on February 8. Mayawati will address meetings in Sitapur and Barabanki on February 1.

Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi will begin the next phase of his campaign from Sitapur on Tuesday. Also, he will seek support for the party candidates in Barabanki and Faizabad that day. On February 1, he will address meetings in Bahraich, Faizabad and Ambedkar Nagar. The next day will take him to Meerut and Basti. These would include a massive public meeting with the Rashtriya Lok Dal at the Ramlila ground in Meerut. He will be in Varanasi, Jaunpur, Siddharthnagar and Sant Kabir Nagar districts on February 4 and in Gonda and Basti on February 5. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is expected to begin her election tours in Amethi and Rae Bareli on February 2.

Cong to mull over proportionate quota

Congress spokesman Rashid Alvi on Monday said the party would look into providing reservation to Muslims in proportion to their population of if it was able to form the government in Uttar Pradesh.

Alvi was speaking to journalists at the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) headquarters here. He exuded confidence that the Congress would form the next government in Manipur, Uttarakhand and Punjab. He attacked chief minister Mayawati for delayed action against ministers facing corruption charges.
