Sound and silence are quite parallel universes, if one were to introspect over the subtleties. It is a person’s individual state of well-being that very often decides how he or she imbibes the essence of different types of sounds and myriad forms of music.
Similarly, for us to imbue the natural qualities of silence, it is important that the mind gets fully prepared to absorb the magic of its benefits.
Classical, modern or even devotional resonances in songs, tunes and sonorous compositions are convincing examples of sounds which touch our lives in ever-changing ways. They help us attain our goals by leaving a different imprint every time they are heard.
Silence also helps achieve for the devotee complete concentration and determined focus.
The pitch of sound and the character of notes reflect a listener’s expectations from specific booms of music strains, at the exact time he/she seeks it. The sound within one’s body is invisible yet significant.
There is no better quote than that of Nobel Laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore, “The fish in the water is silent, the animals on the earth are noisy, the bird in the air is singing. But man has in him the silence of the sea, the noise of the earth and the music of the air.”
Every country’s culture defines the nature of sound and silence. Our country’s contribution to the world, ‘Om’, traces its journey back to origin of the universe.
Rhythm beats and the throb of wavelengths influences the way we think. The dimensions of any music draw their lyricism from the vibrant repertoire of fine arts, technology, nature and emotions.
Noise is nuisance. Its presence might be tolerable, but its unhindered flow is not. On the contrary, sound becomes an indicator, an alarm steering us towards safety but when misused, it has an adverse effect.
It gives us an identity by becoming our voice, while silence guides us by offering a chance to exercise restraint, observe patience and maintain poise.
