TWO SOUTH Africans were on Monday beaten up allegedly by Bajrang Dal activists at Bhajipani village of Parasia tehsil in Chhindwara district. The activists suspected that the South Africans, Gordan and W A Jacob, were carrying beef.

In a complaint lodged with the police the victims said their mobile handsets, wallets and other belongings were also taken away.

Gordan and Jacob, working for a South African company that had bagged a mining contract at Western Coalfield Limited (Chhindwara), were going to Nagpur airport in a jeep when they were accosted and roughed up. Jacob later flew to his country from Nagpur, the police said.

Chhindwara range DIG Ashok Awasthi said 17 people have been booked under Sections 395, 397, 427 and 341 of the IPC, adding that four accused have been arrested.

He admitted that one of the arrested was involved in Bajrang Dal activities, but denied that the rest were linked to the outfit. Awasthi said the flesh recovered from the car has been sent for test to verify whether it was beef.
