Addressing a series of public meetings at Kauriram, he predicted Congress candidate Shivshambhu Nishad’s victory, saying it would open a new chapter in politics and development of the region.

He launched a scathing attack on the alleged failure of the State Government to come up to expectations of the people.

Khurshid said people of the State wanted development and prosperity. The Congress had the capability to lead the State and the country in the right direction, he added.

He held non-Congress Governments responsible for the industrial backwardness of the region.

Hitting out at SP candidate Rambhual Nishad, he said Supreme Court had rejected the election of Rambhual Nishad for alleged misuse of the official machinery in cancellation of nomination papers of an Independent candidate. By fielding him in the by-election, the SP had virtually violated the spirit of verdict given by the Supreme Court, he said.

He claimed that the weaker sections of the society were supporting the Congress, thus bolstering its vote-bank. He appealed to party workers to work with unflagging zeal so that the party could return to power.

He highlighted the failure of the SP Government on various fronts and said the Congress-led UPA Government had introduced various welfare schemes during its one and half year rule.

He said Muslims’ demonstration against caricatures of Prophet Mohammed in Denmark would have carried more weight if the ulema had invited members of other communities to join it.
